Conscious Check-In
The next sustainability opportunity for Ohio hotels probably will not start with a guest asking for it at the front desk.
It may show up in an RFP, a corporate travel policy, a brand standard, or the expectations of international travelers who are already used to seeing sustainability treated as part of hospitality.
For Ohio hotels, this is where the conversation becomes practical. Sustainability is not just for eco-resorts, island destinations, or hotels with ocean views. Many Ohio properties serve corporate travelers, sports teams, university visitors, medical travel, meetings, conferences, weddings, and regional getaways. These guests may not be choosing Ohio because of sustainability alone, but they are increasingly moving through a world where efficiency, transparency, and responsible operations matter.
Regulations and reporting expectations are also becoming more common, especially for hotels connected to global brands, international guests, corporate accounts, or European markets. Even when a regulation does not apply directly, it can still shape buyer expectations and competitive standards.
The good news is that hotels do not have to reinvent the wheel. Sustainability certifications can offer a practical roadmap for understanding where to start, what to measure, and how to communicate progress credibly. Even if certification is not the immediate goal, the framework can help properties identify opportunities that reduce waste, improve operations, strengthen trust, and prepare for the questions that are already starting to appear.
I recently created a short video on why sustainability certifications are more than a badge. They can help hotels identify what to improve, what to measure, and what awards or recognition they may be eligible to pursue.

For Ohio hotels, the opportunity is refreshingly practical: start with the systems that make your property stronger, more efficient, easier to trust — and more likely to be recognized for the work already underway.
